With the United Way of Southeastern Michigan, Brilliant Detroit serves the city as the backbone organization of the Grade Level Reading Campaign. Only 14% of children read at grade level by third grade, a deeply troubling statistic with negative implications for kid success. Since third grade is the time when children begin reading to learn instead of learning to read, and given the third grade reading law going into effect next year that will hold children back if not proficient, the time is now to make a change.

Brilliant Detroit worked with numerous partners, including the Detroit Public Schools Community District and Center for Success, to support high-quality reading interventions throughout the city this summer. These interventions included Raising a Reader, which increases literacy habits in families through weekly book exchanges; Reading is Fundamental, which introduces culturally relevant books to families through exchanges and read-alouds; and ABC Mouse, which is an award-winning online system shown to positively impact reading. These efforts will continue until we have created a Detroit where our children are reading at grade level by third grade and on track for success.
